If there is anything valuable coming out of 2020, let it be the sense of community and family that we have rediscovered in our modern world.
We’ve been cooped up at home, learning to navigate these uncharted waters together through a bombardment of news, uncertainty, fear, panic, Zoom calls, and Lysol.
We keep hearing this term, “the new normal” – what does that even mean? This can’t be forever, right?
But what if some of it can? Like the desire to help each other, checking in to make sure your neighbour has food, medication, and even toilet paper. Making time to connect with loved ones and friends on the phone or FaceTime. The very concept of playing…. like the act of surprising a complete stranger with thoughtful gifts left at their doorstep – commonly called a “Ninja”, or painting rocks for the kids to find on their walks through the neighbourhood, creating art to display in our windows for our neighbours to see.
I have had the pleasure of photographing our community, in the new “socially distant” normal, from 2 meters away, while they sit on their front porch, cuddled up as a family unit. The portraits that will surely be brought out to show our kids and grandkids – remember when?
Working alongside fellow Squamish photographers Paula Owen and Vairdy Frail, we managed to raise over $6000 to battle food insecurity in our community, with all proceeds donated directly to the Squamish Food Bank.
